IT is an undeniable fact that, were it not for the Gubbometer, this blog would have about eight readers. My interest in sport does extend beyond making mildly sarcastic comments about the last 10 minutes of Match of the Day, though. (Not very far, but it does.)

REMEMBER Nigel Bannister? He was the unfortunate linesman who gave the ‘goal that never was’ during Reading’s 2-2 draw at Watford in September. If it’s true that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, Bannister’s came at Bolton yesterday.

IT’S been a strange few months for Harry Redknapp. He is, surely, the only man ever to receive the freedom of Portsmouth to the sound of booing. And he is, certainly, the first 60-something ever to become a poster boy for Nintendo.

Droylsden and out

I ASKED last week if there were to be any more twists in the Droylsden-Chesterfield FA Cup marathon. Silly question. Droylsden finally won the tie last night – but now they are pretty much certain to be thrown out of the competition.

Stop the pigeon

ANIMALS and football don’t mix. (Although I did once have a cat who was quite nifty at Subbuteo. She would just paw the ball into the goal.) Proof of that has come thanks to Argentinian defender Gaston Aguirre – who will now forever be known as “the pigeon killer”.

THERE’S a wonderful story (apparently true) of a cinema in Edinburgh that once showed Groundhog Day in a double bill with itself. Whoever came up with that idea will probably be deriving a lot of enjoyment from Droylsden’s FA Cup run.
